- Description
- 1 videodisc (29 min) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
- Summary
- An interview with Meredith Monk about her recent works, specifically Turtle Dreams and the film Ellis Island. Though the choreographic aspects of Turtle Dreams are touched upon, the conversation ultimately is dominated by discussion of Monk's musical technique, training, and inspirations. Traveling, a track from her album Dolmen Music, is played while Monk describes her concept for the song and some of the vocal techniques. Monk also discusses the limitations of western vocal techniques and her branching interest into other cultural vocal traditions. Pyatt and Monk spend some time on the topic of the glottal stop and its use in various musical cultures. They move on to her film, Ellis Island, and the source of the inspiration to create that work. Monk talks about her weekend visit to the island and her own family history tied to the place. Monk then plugs the upcoming performances of Turtle Dreams and vaguely discusses her future plans.
