  3. Attributed to Franciscus de Retza in Goff, ISTC, BSB-Ink, BM 15th cent. and most other sources; attribution disputed by GW (accessed May 11, 2011): "Die Autorschaft des Franciscus de Retza, lediglich im Blockbuch von 1471 (Copinger 1943. Schreiber IV 374-380) angegeben, ist unwahrscheinlich; der Dominikaner starb 1427, während die Ausbildung der Symbolreihe des Defensorium erst um 1460 beginnt."
  4. This ed. belongs to "Redaktion C" in GW's classification.
  5. Place of printing and name of printer from ISTC and other cited sources.
  6. Dated about 1487-1488 by Sack, on paper evidence, and in ISTC. Dated about 1489-1500 in GW.
  7. Illustrations: 53 woodcuts (2 with xylographic captions), comprising 2 full-page and 51 ca. half-page cuts within single-line borders (border often broken and sometimes entirely broken away). Depict various natural and supernatural phenomena, with accompanying verses comparing them to the perpetual virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The cuts are copied, some in reverse, from 2 earlier editions, by Printer of the Breviarium Ratisponense (Georgius de Spira?), Strasbourg (formerly assigned to Georgius de Spira, Speyer), ca. 1479-1482, and Johann and Conrad Hist, Speyer, ca. 1484. Cf. BM 15th century; ISTC.
  8. Signatures: a-c⁸ d⁶. Last page blank.
  9. Leaf a1 may be a cancel; Fairfax Murray copy begins with a blank leaf apparently conjugate with leaf a8 and having set-off from leaf a2 on verso. Cf. GW, note 2.
