Summary
The panel discusses David Lang's music, how each choreographer (Jessica Lang and Pontus Lidberg) decided on the order of the two works and how they worked with the music. Jessica Lang listened to the rhythms and created an unusual counting structure, how she feels about her completed choreographic work, and some insight into her creative process pertained to how she relied on the music as feminine and masculine, used gravity as one of the laws of nature, and the war between men and women, and concludes with her past performing experience with Twyla Tharp's company Tharp! and how that influenced her choreographic style. David Lang discusses how these works were created for percussionists and their need to build instruments as part of this work's process, and how he composed these two musical compositions beginning with the problem solving aspect of putting the endless melody into regular shape and deciding to add a military beat. Pontus Lidberg discusses how he decided on the order of the two musical compositions, what his process was like working and living with these dancers for five weeks, how this choreographic work relates to human encounters and how he was influenced by the opening of a flower one morning during this residency, and his past works using David Lang's music. This panel discussion concludes with the panelist briefly talking about their next projects.
