Summary
Joan Acocella (dance critic and editor of The diary of Vaslav Nijinsky: Unexpurgated edition) discusses Vaslav Nijinsky's childhood, dance career, his relationship with Serge Diaghilev, and dancing with the Ballets Russes. The circumstances leading up to his mental breakdown including his marriage to Romola and being fired from the Ballets Russes by Serge Diaghilev. Acocella discusses the six and one-half weeks Nijinsky took writing these diaries and gives a brief overview of their contents. The history and ownership of the Nijinsky diaries which were first sold by Sotheby's in 1979 after Romola Nijinsky's death in 1978. Three journals are owned by The Jerome Robbins Dance Division and the four journal containing letters written by Nijinsky to various people, was given to the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
