Summary
George Jellinek replays excerpts from his radio interviews with Andre Kostelanetz, a popular orchestral music conductor and arranger, one of the pioneers of easy listening music. Kostelanetz recalls his meetings with various singers with whom he had personal and professional relationships such as Ezio Pinza, Lily Pons, Bidú Sayão. He talks about Ezio Pinza and his sense of humor, and how he pretended to speak Russian and then recorded Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov in Italian. Remembering Lily Pons, French-American coloratura soprano, to whom he was married from 1938 to 1958, he discusses her great confidence, combined with lifelong stage fright, her wonderful memory of her roles, her style and lively stage presence. He also reminiscences about her last concert in 1974 after an 18 year absence, that she sang two years before her death in 1976. Speaking of Bidu Sayao, the conductor mentions her vocal talent that helped them to communicate without having a common language (the singer did not speak English at that time). The following recordings are played during the interview: overture to La princesse jaune (music by Saint-Saëns ; Andre Kostelanetz, conductor); aria from Boris Godunov (Ezio Pinza (Boris), singer ; music by Mussorgsky); Je suis Titania, from Mignon (Lily Pons, singer ; music by Thomas); Casinha Pequenina (Bidú Sayão, singer ; Brazilian folksong); two dances from the Allecko suite (music by Rachmaninoff)
