Summary
  1. George Jellinek interviews Andre Kostelanetz. Kostelanetz recalls Lily Pons, a French-American coloratura soprano, to whom he was married from 1938 to 1958 after which the marriage was dissolved. He discusses Pons's career as an opera singer in France and later in America. He talks about her great confidence, combined with lifelong stage fright, her wonderful memory of her roles, her style and lively stage presence. He also reminiscences about her last concert in 1974 that she sang two years before her death in 1976. The following recordings of Lily Pons's performances are played during the interview: Una voce poca fa, from The barber of Seville (recorded in 1931); Bell song, from Lakme (recorded in 1944); Queen of the night, from the Magic flute; Where beauty dwells (music by Rachmaninoff ; lyrics by G. Galina); Salute to France, from Daughter of the Regiment; Marseillaise; Vocalise, op. 34, no. 14 (music by Rachmaninoff)
