Summary

Robert Sherman interviews Andre Kostelanetz. Kostelanetz talks about the Promenade Concerts in New York and Vienna, Austria, which he initiated at Lincoln Center in 1963, and explains his concept of these programs: lighter and more modern music, popular soloists, an informal setting and more theatrical dimensions such as ballet or dance. He also speaks about the lively atmosphere of the Promenade Concerts, his frustration and exhaustion of touring with an orchestra and about his vacation in Bora Bora. The following musical works are played during the interview: Bachianas brasileiras, no. 4 (H. Villa-Lobos, composer ; A. Kostelanetz, piano); Lehár's Merry widow waltz (A. Kostelanetz, conductor); Through the looking glass (by Deems Taylor ; members of the New York Philharmonic). The program is sponsored by Scientific American and includes an interview with Gerard Piel about the magazine.
