Description

Summary
  • "A participatory one-day workshop framing the question, Does dance make a difference? Participants will address this question through various approaches to analyzing movement, scoring and performing, culminating in the wordwide Planetary Dance." -- Movement Research.
  • Disc 1 begins with the participants drawing an image of nature and discussing the three levels of awareness: physical, emotional, and mental. The first dance includes awareness while performing a score and then sharing the experience. Disc 2 begins with an improvisation exercise on hands and knees, includes a score based on resources Anna Halprin observed during the exercise, a three minute movement exercise which is then named and recycled, and finally a weight experiment combined with an analysis of breath. Disc 3 continues with the weight experiment and then breaks down the arm movements helping to keep them structurally correct. Disc 4 begins on the floor with participants lifting various body parts and releasing them to the ground, this moves into spiraling and spiral movements, and continues to standing by using integration of the upper and lower body, walking with up and down movements and swinging arms combined with the use of negative and positive space, and concudes with the history of the Planetary Dance. Disc 5 begins with the directions for creating the Planetary Dance, answering questions, creating a score, practicing and performing this dance, and then collecting the drawings completed at the beginning of workshop and creating a second portrait. Disc 6 begins with finishing and discussing these drawings, observing slides of drawings by previous participants from various workshops, final questions and comments, and concludes with participants individually speaking with Halprin.
