• Southey wrote the first three stanzas, and the stanza on the "Cold-Bath-Prison"; the rest was written by Coleridge (cf. Coleridge letter to H. W. Montagu, April 1830 [#1686 in Griggs]).

[25], depicting the Devil inside a jail cell with two suffering prisoners. -- "He saw a certain Minister -- (a Minister to his mind) Go into a certain house -- with a majority behind," p. [30], depicting the Devil watching the Prime Minister enter the House of Lords; the King and nobles watch from an adjoining room.
