Summary
Daniel Nagrin speaks with Barbara Newman about the reasons he questions the value of the oral history process and biographical approach to studying or experiencing art; the special relationship of the dancer with the audience; the translation of live stage works to film; more on his doubts that a biographical approach can help to illuminate an artist's work, including his belief that the work must speak for itself; reasons an artist should not explain the meaning of his work; briefly, teaching choreography; briefly, the relationship of his work to that of Helen Tamiris; his fundamental skepticism, including how this contrasts with his earlier way of thinking.
