Description
1 sound disc (ca. 42 min.) : digital; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
  • Tracks 1 - track 5 (ca. 26 min.). Ted Shawn pedagogy lecture no. 3 (continuation). [Begins abruptly after identification of the recording by a female voice as "lecture no. 3 continued".] Ted Shawn speaks about the principles of teaching dance, in particular, the five stages of teaching technique, including the use of audio-visual materials in analysis and demonstration; the dance classroom, including the importance of space and the effects that can be achieved by using certain colors on the walls.
  • Tracks 6-8 (ca. 15 min.). Ruth St. Denis commentary on films. Ruth St. Denis provides commentary as films of her works are screened, including Yogi, Brahms waltz and liebestraum (Waltz, op. 39, no. 15), Gregorian chant, Dance of Theodora, and Scarf dance, including with respect to the inspiration for the dance Yogi, the music for Gregorian chant; the costume for Dance of Theodora, the veil used in Scarf dance, and the influence of Loie Fuller on St. Denis's use of the veil.
  • Track 9 00 (ca. 1:30 min.). This part of the recording consists of an unidentified man, possibly José Limón, teaching a flamenco class.

Note
  • Continuation of Ted Shawn's lecture no. 3 (tracks 1-4) and Ruth St. Denis's commentary on films of her dancing Yogi, Gregorian chant and other dances (tracks 5-8), in each case at the Jacob Pillow's Dance Festival, in Lee, Mass., in the early 1950s. The Ted Shawn lecture may be a continuation of the lecture no. 3 recorded in Ted Shawn: pedagogy lecture no. 2 (excerpt) and pedagogy lecture no. 3 (excerpt). Carol Lynn, who was the cinematographer, is present but does not speak.
  • Sound quality ranges from good to poor. Tracks 3 and 4 of the recording are marred at times by an extraneous high pitched noise, but Ted Shawn's voice is almost always clearly audible. Ruth St. Denis's voice is soft but also usually is clearly audible. The sound quality on track 9 is poor.
