- Summary
- James C. Nicola, artistic director of the New York Theatre Workshop, discusses his career with playwright Doug Wright. He begins with his decision to switch from acting to directing while studying drama as an undergrad, then discusses his work as a casting director at the Public Theater and his relationship with Joseph Papp. After touching on his career as a director during the 1980s at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., the subject turns to his 20-plus years at New York Theatre Workshop. Discussion covers several significant productions at NYTW, particularly Jonathan Larson's groundbreaking musical Rent, and Rebecca Gilman's adaptation of Carson McCuller's novel The heart is a lonely hunter. Nicola also examines public and critical perceptions of NYTW as a "political" company, and cites angry responses from viewers to a number of shows staged there.
