Note
  • "Made in a limited edition of thirty copies ... using IRIS prints from mixed media figure drawings, hand inked seventeenth century star atlas illustrations, and punched stars. The figure drawings by Charles Hobson were made with charcoal, pastel and acrylic paint. The drawings were scanned and printed as IRIS prints on Somerset 300 paper with IRIS Graphics Equipoise ink at Urban Digital Color, San Francisco. The star atlas illustrations are from Helvelius's [sic] Uranographia published in 1690 and were each hand-printed with color etching inks. Stars were punched in the BFK Rives text paper using a single die punch made by Ken Die Cutting of Carson City, Nevada, based on the star shape Galileo drew when he first looked through the telescope. The printing of the Helvelius pages, the punching of the stars, the folding of the concertina binding and the sewing of the signatures was done with the assistance of Celeste Wiedmann. John DeMerritt bound the books in boards and made the clam shell box. The book was designed and written by Charles Hobson"--Colophon.
  • The Hevelius star atlas referenced was published as: Johannis Hevelii Firmamentum Sobiescianum, sive, Uranographia (Gedani : Typis J.-Z. Stollii, 1690). The ill. were engraved by C. de La Haye after Andreas Stech.
  • Gatherings are sewn to an accordion-folded, illustrated spine sheet. The spread back of the spine presents a full view of the constellations as drawn for Hevelius' star atlas. The book can be stood upright so that the star shape in the center is apparent. Six constellations are punched into the pages of the book with a star-shaped punch, and the book works as a miniature planetarium when the accompanying light pen is pointed at the punched holes.
