Summary
Documentary following 25 year-old actress Jane Fonda and her colleagues as they work on a play called The fun couple prior to its Broadway opening. Includes rehearsal footage, interviews with Fonda, and excerpts from the play as seen in previews in several cities. Director Lee Strasberg visits backstage after one performance. On arrival in New York, Fonda and the play's director Andreas Voutsinas visit Strasberg at the Actors Studio, where Madeleine Sherwood performs the Rodgers & Hart song Bewitched, bothered and bewildered. Opening night at the Lyceum Theater includes backstage footage, scenes from the play, and a post-show visit by the actors to Sardi's Restaurant. Critic Walter Kerr is interviewed en route to the show and is seen at his office at the Herald-Tribune newspaper, writing a negative review of the play. After a backstage announcement that the play will close after its second performance, documentary concludes with footage from that closing night performance.
