  1. Commentator Terry Gross interviews American composer and lyricist for stage and film Stephen Sondheim (CD 1, tracks 1-6). Sondheim speaks about his musical influences such as Oscar Hammerstein. He discusses both of his careers: as a musician and a lyricist. He also talks about composing music for different shows such as Into the Woods, Company and Sweeney Todd, and writing lyrics for West Side story and Gypsy. During his interview an excerpt from the musical Sweeney Todd is played. Introduction includes biographical information on the composer.
  2. Interview with American singer-songwriter Carly Simon (CD 1, tracks 7-10). Simon talks about her family, her background, her childhood, her mother, and her influences. She discusses her book for children Amy the dancing bear (1989). She also speaks about both of her careers: as a composer and a musician.
  3. Commentator Terry Gross interviews Carol King, and plays various excerpts from her songs (CD 2, tracks 1-5). King talks about her life and career as a songwriter and a singer, and her partnership with Gerry Goffin. Includes biographical information on the composer.
  4. Paul Harvey speaks about Hope University, an arts for the mentally disabled (CD 2, track 6).
  5. Singer and pianist Michael Feinstein discusses his life and career with interviewer Tom Snyder (CD 2, tracks 7-11). Feinstein also talks about his work as a cataloger and archivist of Ira and George Gershwin's extensive collection of phonograph records. He also introduces his new M.G.M. album. During the interview excerpts from his selected songs are played. Includes biographical information on the musician.
