- Summary
- Music critic Tim Page interviews Pulitzer Prize winning American composer and educator Joseph Schwantner. Schwantner talks of his career as a composer; and about the special grant that allowed him to be the Composer-in-Residence at the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He also comments abou the major music schools in the Midwest and their contribution to new music in the region. Schwantner notes, however, that a lot of information and the new things happening in new music don't get communicated in the United States as they do in Europe. The division between composer and audience is no longer what it was, according to Schwantner, and he believes that "new works can be part of a living repertoire" that are supported by the audience. Schwartner says he first needs to communicate his ideas to the musicians and that musicians need to care about his music. He gives advice to young composers to find their own voice, and to work with performers who care about their work. During his interview excerpts from his works Wind, willow, whisper, and Magabunga (four poems of Agueda Pizarro) are played.
