Summary
Music critic Tim Page interviews performer, composer and conductor Kermit Moore, and composer, singer and poet Dorothy Rudd Moore. Kermit Moore talks about his three careers: as a cellist, composer and conductor. He says that although he began his career as a cellist, the same time he liked conducting and composing. He wrote his first serious composition at age 12 for the cello. He comments on various prejudices held about African-American composers, and that althoug he is a classical African-American composer, he never felt pressure to write jazz compositions. He introduces his Music for cello and piano, excerpts of which are played. At the end of the interview he gives advice to young composers. Dorothy Moore talks about two of her careers: as a poet and a composer. She says she always wanted to be a composer, but never wrote music on her own words. She introduces her opera Frederick Douglass, based on the life of African-American statesman and reformer Frederick Douglass. Excerpts of the opera are played. At the end of the interview she gives advice to young composers.
