Summary
Music critic Tim Page interviews American composer and music administrator William Schuman. Schuman talks about his career as a musician, teacher of composition, and the president of the Juilliard School of Music (1945-1961) and the president of Lincoln Center (1961-1969). He discusses the meaning of classical music in modern word full of various musical styles and aesthetics. The composer speaks about his work with conductor and composer Serge Koussevitzky who conducted many of Schuman's works. Schuman also discusses the state of music today; he speaks about the importance of coverage of popular music today by the press. He discusses his Symphony for strings and In praise of Shahn. He gives advice to the young composer. During his interview excerpts from his Symphony for strings and In praise of Shahn are played.
