Summary
Arthur Schlesinger (historian and educator) discusses the Federal Writer's Project (FWP) with American authors Ellen Terry, Jerre Mangione, Ralph Ellison, David Ignatoff, Lionel Abel, and Livingston Biddle, all participants of this project which helped them with their professional development at the beginning of their careers. He tells how this project helped to support American writers and journalists during the Great Depression. Part of the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program, it employed impoverished writers to produce over 1000 books and pamphlets and brought some major talents to the fore. Introduced by Vartan Gregorian, former president of the New York Public Library.
