Doug Varone speaks with Suzanne Carbonneau about the origins of the title "Alchemy"; Steve Reich's score as homage to Daniel Pearl; the Daniel Pearl Foundation; trying to honor the score's original trajectory; creating the male/female relationships in the dance; using imagery from the Book of Daniel; his experience working through the score; the difficulty of the source material; the inclusion of text in the program; reactions to the dance; making the personal nature of the material universal; his creative process for the piece; working with Tim Mackabee on set design; working on lighting with Jane Cox; how working in opera has opened his mind; creating work that surpasses source material and addresses humanity on a larger level.
