Doug Varone speaks with Suzanne Carbonneau about growing up on Long Island; the Plainview Conservatory of Dance; studying tap at an early age; having a movement-oriented family; his parents influencing "Let's dance"; getting involved in the contemporary dance world in the early 1970s; getting a scholarship to the New Dance Group; balancing the musical theatre and modern dance worlds; his educational experiences; moving to New York City and joining the Limon Dance Company; Jose Limon's choreography in comparison to Lar Lubovitch's choreography; presenting evenings at P.S. 122; beginning the choreography process with music; deciding to leave New York City and moving to San Francisco; returning to New York; his choreographic process; dance icons Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire; his love of MGM musicals; his piece, "Rise"; his perspectives on movement; what it is like to hear interpretations of his work that have nothing to do with his original aim; his Parallel Lives workshops; "Possession" in 1994, based upon the A.S.
