Summary
Peter Gay, Jewish American historian of social history, gives a lecture on the history of German Jews continuous 1600 years living in Germany; and how their community and their intellectual heritage was destroyed by Nazis in the Weimar Republic, 1939-1945. He discusses antisemitism of the nineteenth century and how it led to pogroms and then to the total destruction of German Jews during the Holocaust and World War II; and about his visit to the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora in Tel-Aviv. He talks also about language development from Hebrew and Yiddish, which is an adaptation of medieval German to Jewish, and the role of language in assimilation of German Jews into the German language, culture, and all aspects of intellectual life.
