Summary
Christopher Hitchens (an author, journalist and literary critic) talks with Jessica Mitford about her book "The American way of death" (1963), which is about corruption in funeral business in the mid 1950s. She details how death benefits paid to children of dead parents were taken from them by undertakers for funeral ceremonies. Mitford criticizes funeral industry for using unscrupulous business practices to take advantage of grieving families. She speaks about how a non-profit organization, the Funeral Society fought to make these ceremonies affordable. She also talks about her famously eccentric upper class British family, whose members where fascists and British supporters of Hitler. She states that she sympathized with Communism and immigrated to the USA to become a member of the American Communist Party. At the end of the lecture she answers questions from the audience.
