Summary
Suki Schorer, senior faculty member at the School of American Ballet, lectures on the curriculum and teaching methods at the School of American Ballet; her talk is accompanied by demonstrations of classroom exercises and choreographic excerpts by current students and alumnae of the school. Schorer discusses the Russian school of technique developed by Vaganova, Balanchine's relation to it and his own technique and methods; versions of the Nutcracker pas de deux and barre exercises are presented to demonstrate these distinctions. Schorer describes how Balanchine's classroom practice supported his choreography, his approaches to barre exercises, tempo and pointe shoes. Students from different levels in the school demonstrate classroom combinations. The program closes with two choreographic works by Balanchine, performed by recorded music.
