Summary
Melissa Barak and Douglas Lee discuss the ballets they are in the process of creating for New York City Ballet's 2009 winter season. The choreographers speak about their motivation and inspiration for choreographing; how they got started; the experience of alternating between performing and choreographing; their experiences with the New York Choreographic Institute. Barak presents a demonstration of her rehearsal process with the dancers, working on two excerpts of the ballet; she then speaks about the ballet's music (Britten's Simple symphony), traditional style and costumes. Douglas Lee speaks about the music, casting, working process, title and style of his new ballet, Lifecasting; his comments are interspersed with three excerpts from the ballet. Dancer Robert Fairchild joins the panel and speaks about working with choreographers on new ballets, dancing classical and contemporary work, and his solos in Lifecasting. Fairchild and the choreographers all comment about the distinctions between solos, pas de deux and corps sections of ballets. The program concludes with a performance of two excerpts from the Barak ballet.
