Summary
Documentary film on the life and music of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, contemporary Polish composer. Includes excerpts from his musical works and inerviews with the composer and with Adrian Thomas, a British specialist on Polish music and author of the book, Górecki, and with Reinbert de Leeuw, Dutch composer, conductor and pianist. (The musical excerpts are listed in the closing credits.) Adrian Thomas speaks about Górecki's avant-garde role in Polish music, comparing his works from the in 1950's and 60's with those of Lutosławski and Penderecki; discussing the influence of Medieval, traditional and church music on his work during the 1970's and 80's; and his movement toward a more pogressive, contemporary style in late 1980's. The rediscovery of his compositions abroad brought him great fame, almost that of a pop star. He speaks about the simplicity and purity of Górecki's feelings and thoughts as reflected in his III Symphony. In spite of the fact that he composed a lot of church music, A. Thomas considers him not a religious but spiritual composer. Reinbert de Leeuw speaks about his visit to Górecki's house and how the composer played excerpts from this compositions on the piano to show how they should be performed.
