Summary
  1. This program focuses on Voices and visions: the ABT/Altria women's choreography project. Moderator Wes Chapman discusses Altria's financial support for the project and introduces Stephen Pier, the workshop leader, and Aszure Barton, choreographer of the ballet Barbara for ABT II Studio Company. Pier discusses his method of mentoring novice choreographers, and the exercises designed to develop spatial and musical skills and the creation of movement. Film footage of the workshop is shown, and choreographic sketches are demonstrated live by workshop participants. The participants speak about the challenges and successes they experienced in the program. In the next segment of the evening Aszure Barton discusses how she started dancing and choreographing, her work with Mikhail Baryshnikov, and her method of collaborating with dancers in the studio. The program concludes with a full performance of the ballet Barbara. At 56 min. into the recording, there is a problem with the musical score for the ballet which briefly interrupts the performance.
