- Summary
- This program celebrates the career of composer Charles Wuorinen on the occasion of his 70th birthday. During the first panel discussion, Wuorinen and Sean Curran discuss the music and choreography for The mission of Virgil, inspired by episodes from Dante's Inferno and William Blake's illustrations of the Inferno. In the second discussion, Wuorinen and James Levine discuss their working relationship and aspects of music in performance, including the role of musicians in preserving music; Levine comments on the qualities of Wuorinen's music, and they speak about John Ashbery's poetry and the challenges of setting text to music. A video of Ashbery reading his poems precedes the performance of Ashberyana.
