Summary
Intermission features Friedelind Wagner, the granddaughter of the composer Richard Wagner, whose music Toscanini admired and performed, tell Ben Grauer in Baureuth, Germany, about her long friendship with maestro, whom she first met on the day of her father's Siegfried Wagner's death. She talks about maestro's modesty (he never read or talked about himself considering it to be "bad taste"), his personal and artistic integrity, his "mad drive" based on dissatisfaction with himself, and his "totally uncompromising" nature that according to Friedeland Wagner accounts for all human achievements and successes.
