- Summary
- In this adaptation of the Burnett novel, noteworthy for its "striking picture book quality," the central action takes place in New York rather than the London of the original novel. Leaving for the trenches of World War I, Sara Crewe's father uproots his daughter from their Indian home and deposits her at Miss Minchin's Seminary for Girls in New York City. Although Captain Crewe's wealth confers privileged status on Sara, she is detested by Miss Minchin, the stern headmistress, for her intelligence and candor. When Captain Crewe is lost in action and his assets seized, the vengeful Miss Minchin banishes Sara to the attic where she befriends the black servant girl Becky. At the conclusion, however, Sara and her father are reunited. Reduced to penury, Miss Minchin is forced to become a chimney sweep's assistant. (Circulates).
