Summary
  1. Based on factual material, Lynch's film tracks the tragic story of John Merrick, a 19th-century British man given the grotesque sobriquet due to the disease that caused his head to become huge and deformed. Displayed in a carnival sideshow, Merrick is disovered by Dr. Frederick Treves and taken to a hospital for study. When the press gets wind of this, it confers celebrity status on the sensitive outcast, a development that causes a crisis of conscience for his benefactor. The film has been praised for its black and white photography and skill in evoking 19th-century England. (Circulates)
