- Summary
- Written, directed, taped and edited by members of the New York teen group Youth Force '88, this tape analyzes the influence of television on teenage alcohol abuse and investigates the devastating effect of crack on New York City youth. Refuting the simplistic "Just say no" campaign of the Reagan era, Youth Force '88 advocates the establishment of social programs that empower young people to organize for direct action and change. Teenagers who live at the Washington Houses in East Harlem formed the Work it Out Players, a theater group which performs skits on relevant issues for schools and community centers. In the Stapleton area of Staten Island, young people have organized neighborhood patrols to deter drug dealing and other criminal activity. United Youth Midtown, a youth group that prints its own newspaper, embarked on an investigative report to expose unscrupulous shopkeepers selling alcoholic beverages to minors. They also united with community residents to reclaim a local park from drug dealers. Interwoven with these examples of youth-inspired community activism are cut-out animated sequences about a young black girl named Shateema Bimberry who lives in the Bronx with her family. Shateema resists the drugs offered by a local dealer, seeks counseling about her sister who is starting to drink beer and visits her older brother in the hospital after he has been shot by rival drug dealers.
