- Summary
- Made shortly before Picasso's death, this survey, in three parts, examines the artist's work through study and analysis of color reproductions of his paintings. It covers a full range of Picasso's work, places where he lived while producing them, and photographs of the artist at work and recreation. Part 1: From 1900 through Cubism: Period photographs and other material are used to analyze Picasso's early work, including experiments with analytical and experimental Cubism, examples from the blue and rose periods, Les demoiselles d'Avignon, The Harlequins, and their impact on the art world. Part 2: The Volvanic thirties: Picasso's departure from Paris for the sun and sea of Provence and Côte d'Azur resulted in an explosion of paintings representing dreams and obsessions, The seated bather, Girl before a mirror, and Minotauromachy. His agony over the Spanish Civil War inspired Guernica, commissioned for the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris Exhibition. Part 3: The 1940's and after: Picasso's later works beginning with Night fishing at Antibes, Joie de vivre and the Classical fantasies groups are examined. His departure for Villauris marked the increased importance of sculpture and ceramic in his work. Man with a lamb is examined in detail in its village setting. This section includes visits to the Museum of Antibes and several of Picasso's houses and castles in the south of France.
