Summary
This program examines the Jamaican coral reef as an evolutionary chronicle that harkens back to a time when there were no fish in the sea. The complexity of this most ancient of ecosystems is explained: "Corals are neither plants nor rocks. They are societies of living animals. A coral reef is a community bursting with life, with predators seen and unseen." Cousteau and his team observe the life forms that are active in conditioning the water, those that secrete calcium carbonate, the building material of the reef, the creatures that emerge by day and those by night. The camera reveals some coral to be "aggressive" in their conquest for space.
