- Summary
- "In the following videotape, you will witness how the city of New York, during the last days of the Koch administration spent $600,000 to build a hole." In Spring 1989, a group of squatters who had taken over an abandoned East Village tenement were driven from their homes by an arson fire and later by formal eviction proceedings and city-ordered demolition. This activist advocacy tape chronicles each step of the protest process undertaken by former residents of 315 East 8th Street and community supporters. Initially, city officials agreed to a stay of demolition if the squatters could prepare a rehabilitation plan and present it at a court hearing, but then reneged and moved in to take over the property. Police in riot gear on motorcycles and in vans cordoned off the area to facilitate the demolition. Violence erupted in clashes between demonstrators and police, resulting in arrests. In the end, the demolition continued for three days until nothing remained but a rubble-strewn lot.
