Summary
Here comes the cat! was the first collaborative picture book effort between a Russian and an American artist. The story, adapted here using vibrantly-hued animation reminiscent of Russian folk art, is a subtle homily against prejudice and mistaken first impressions. From a watchtower, a mouse espies the gargantuan shadow of a cat and hurriedly boards a hot air balloon to warn his fellow rodents, "Here comes the cat!" When the balloon is hit by lightning, the falling mouse warns the seagulls and even the fish in the sea of the coming menace. As the cat approaches a mouse town, the diminutive creatures flee stores, the movie theater and the hospital in panic. When at last the feline "enemy" arrives, a baby mouse is the only inhabitant to greet him. To everyone's surprise and relief, the great orange tabby pulls a wagon laden with a large piece of Swiss cheese. The mice feast to their hearts content and groom the cat as it dozes. The next morning, the grateful mice gather to bid a fond farewell and reciprocate the visitor's kindness by giving him a big can of milk.
