Summary
This iconographic adaptation meshes Jeanette Winter's colorful primitive paintings with renditions of an American folksong to relate a story of the Underground Railroad, the secret network which aided escaping slaves find their way north to freedom. Long before the Civil War, an old sailor named Peg Leg Joe sought employment as a handyman on southern plantations so that he could help slaves escape their bondage. He taught them the words to the song, "Follow the drinking gourd," which contained directions for the route of the Underground Railroad. Joe drew pictures in mud or charcoal on dead trees to serve as markers. The "drinking gourd" of the song was another name for the Big Dipper, the constellation that always points to the North Star. To keep from being separated, one family, headed by Molly and James, followed the "drinking gourd" to freedom. Fleeing through the woods by night and hiding in the trees by day, the family finally arived at the Ohio River. There, Peg Leg Joe guided them across and told them how to identify the safe houses of the Underground Railroad. In the end, Molly, James and their loved ones reached Lake Erie and the steamship that would take them to a new life in Canada.
