- Summary
- Paul Robeson made his film debut in this melodramatic story about gamblers, bootleggers, and "Jackleg" preachers who exploited the religiosity of poor blacks. It focuses on one minister who embodies this evil. He extorts money from the proprietor of a notorious gambling house, betrays a girl from his parish, forces her to steal her mother's savings and leave home, and finally kills the girl's brother when he comes to the sister's protection.
