- Summary
- Our hospitality (1923), b&w, 75 min.: Set in the antebellum South, this Keaton comedy begins on a serious note with the Canfield-McKay feud based on that of the historical Hatfields and McCoys. It returns twenty years later with Willie McKay, a New York dandy, summoned to take possession of the family estate. During his sojourn, McKay befriends a young woman who turns out to be a Canfield. Invited to her home for supper, McKay learns that he is eating amidst an enemy clan bent on revenge but restrained according to the code of southern hospitality. McKay attempts to extend the visit to preserve life and limb. When he does make his exit, dressed as a woman, high adventure ensues with a daring rescue of his lady love from the grips of a waterfall. In addition to Natalie Talmadge, Keaton's wife at the time, the comedy included appearances by the comic's father Joseph Keaton and baby son. Keaton subjected himself to peril during the making of the film and had to be hospitalized on one occasion. Sherlock, Jr. (1924), b&w, 44 min.: Slapstick stunts tinged by surrealist touches characterize this comedy in which Keaton stars as The Boy, projectionist/sweeper at the local movie theater and amateur sleuth. Banished by his girlfriend through the machinations of his rival, The Boy is anxious to be exonerated of a crime he is accused of committing. Justice is secured in a dream sequence, in which The Boy's doppelganger leaps into the screen world where his girlfriend and enemy are the actors. The film is noteworthy for its film-within-a-film structure and for Keaton's virtuoso illustration of film editing.
