Description
1 videocassette (120 min.) : sd., b&w.; 1/2 in.
Summary
This eeerie ghost story, made in pre-World War II Poland and employing the resources of the Warsaw Yiddish Theater, is considered one of the most heavily atmospheric of the Yiddish talkies and is steeped in religion, ritual, folklore and supernaturalism. Although betrothed by their fathers at birth, Khonen and Leah grow up unaware of each other's existence. When Khonen, an impoverished and otherwordly student, appears in the town of Brenits, Leah is drawn to him as he is to her. However, Leah's avaricious father prefers a wealthier suitor. Desperate, Khonen uses his knowledge of the Cabbalah to conjure the aid of occult powers but dies in the process. At the moment that she is about to be wed, Leah is possessed by Khonen's spirit in the form of a dybbuk. The venerable tsadek of Miropol discovers the source of the possession and invokes the threat of excommunication to release the spirit. At the conclusion, Leah joins her beloved Khonen in death.
