Summary

After four months of desperate fighting, an armistice is signed and Japanese troops withdraw from Shanghai. In Vienna, 150,000 workers demonstrate the strength of the Social Democrats in an orderly procession through the city. Irish-English talks break down. In the U.S., Albert Einstein arrives to conduct research at the California Institute of Technology, air parcel post is inaugurated, Mississsippians cope with the flood waters of the Tallahatchie River, and tons of food are distributed by the Emergency Relief Committee. After months of investigation, the body of Charles Lindbergh's kidnapped baby is found. Al Capone is sentenced to prison for tax evasion. Amelia Earhart celebrates her achievement as the first woman to make a solo flight across the Atlantic and is given a ticker tape parade in New York City. The Americans triumph at the Winter games in Lake Placid, but suffer a number of crashes in the Indy 500. Helen Wills Moody wins the Wightman Cup and the Yankees take second World Series game. The nation's capital is rocked by the Bonus Riots as disgruntled war veterans clash with police. The home of the Sacco-Vanzetti judge is destroyed by a bomb. New York's Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt wins the Presidential election.
