Description
1 videocassette (60 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
"This tape is based on the story of the 19th-century poet and writer, Isabelle Eberhardt, who travelled in Algeria dressed as an Arab man and embraced Sufism, a mystical version of Islam. Her brief, extreme life ended abruptly, at age 27, in a flash flood in the desert. An unsettled spirit, she was compelled to live on the edge, to obliterate the self through drugs, mysticism, lust and deprivation. Yet, she produced one of the most sensitive accounts of the Islamic way of life. This videotape is a fragmented biography. Rather than enquiring about the "truth" of this enigmatic figure, Thornton seeks to unravel the multiple layers of representations produced in the western mind by "the mysterious Orient." The persona of Isabelle, played by five different performers, is projected on a set of colonial melodramas, educational films and reports of contemporary travellers.
