Description
1 videocassette (55 min.) : sd., b&w/col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Poetry, personal testimony, rap and drama unite in this video to oppose the homophobia and racism directed towards gay black men. Riggs gives voice to those silenced and made invisible by discrimination and shares their anger. His intricately-structured collage employs a mix of styles ranging from social documentary to experimental montage and interweaves examples of black/gay cultural expression like the snap and voguing. Riggs himself confronts the camera to reveal his odyssey of pain and self-awareness and rues the fact that black homosexuals are ignored within the larger gay culture and are discriminated against by black heterosexuals. Blending songs and archival footage of the Civil Rights movement with contemporary scenes at Gay Pride and AIDS demonstrations, Riggs sounds a call to action and concludes with the coda: "Black men loving black men is the revolutionary act."
