Summary
A documentary on the early years of rhythm and blues music from the 2nd half of the 1940s which included only black performers and mainly black listeners to its transformation into rock and roll and a mass market culture by the mid 50s. This program explores the social fabric of rhythm and blues and the financial struggles of the music's early black performers to get their music better known on records, radio, and into the big time theaters such as the Apollo. Most of the narration and performances are by Ruth Brown and Charles Brown with interviews of musicians, disc jockeys, record store owners and producers. Other performances are by Fats Domino, Louie Jordon, Bill Haley and others and are supplemented by vintage film footage and photos of black social life.
