Summary
Loosely based on the famous Ballet Russes and its impressario Serge Diaghilev, the film centers on the story of Victoria Page, a young dancer who joins the Lermontov Company run by an autocratic director who demands absolute dedication. Victoria achieves fame dancing the "Red Shoes" ballet but is torn between commitment to her art and the love she has for Julian Craster, a composer. Characterized by a blending of music, dance and painting, the film has as its climax, a full-length ballet that moves from stage into fantasy.
