Summary
This tape documents a summer program at The Madison Square Boys and Girls Club in Manhattan where an ethnically diverse group of children was introduced to the various plants that grow in the world's rainforests. Under the guidance of the club's teachers, an outdoor environment was decorated, painted and planted to re-create a tropical rainforest. Greenery was imported from the jungle to be transplanted and studied. An older couple visited the center to instruct the children in the varieties of exotic vegetation. A young man, who lived among the Indians of South America, discussed the special relationship the indigenous people have with the plants and animals around them. Watching a film about the destruction of the Australian rainforest, the youngsters drew pictures about this ecological crisis and later joined Earth Day demonstrations with a sign of their own making to voice their concern for the planet.
