Description
1 videocassette (75 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Not so much a documentary as a "cultural document," Charles Atlas' exploration of New York City's downtown music scene is a "fragmented, fast-paced compendium of voices and sounds," that reflect the cacophony and freneticism of city life. Cameras visit John Zorn, "an American improviser," who has produced a diversified sound fusing music from eastern cultures, jazz, experimental and cartoon scores. The ballad-like compositions of the group Hugo Largo are documented as well as the "new wave drone rock" of Sonic Youth. Performance footage is supplemented by the critical analyses of John Rockwell, music critic for the New York Times, David Fricke, music writer for Rolling Stone and members of the downtown scene.
