Summary
Fassbinder blends epic, comedy and melodrama to chronicle postwar Germany from the fall of Hitler through the "economic miracle" as embodied in one woman. Maria Braun struggles to survive in Berlin through the war years while her husband serves at the Russian front. Returning home after Maria thinks him long dead, he is imprisoned for killing the G.I. who has befriended her. Maria then becomes involved with an industrialist and rises to wealth and power. This was the first of Fassbinder's films to win popularity abroad.
