Description
  1. 1 videocassette (30 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
  1. 1) Honky Tonk Bud (1985, color, 11 min.): This jazz-rap composition features the music of Chicago saxophonist/composer/arranger Edward Wilkerson, Jr. The subject is an urban legend immortalized in the black oral tradition called "toasting," doggerel poems that chronicle characters from black street mythology. The protagonist of this short is Bud, a smooth, big-time drug dealer who is foiled by an FBI agent posing as a junkie. The entire neighborhood attends Bud's trial to offer moral and musical support. John Toles-Bey appears as the rap-narrator. Ernest Rayford III stars as Bud; Byron Chatman plays agent Edgar J. Peagan. 2) Bird lives! (1977, color, 4 min.): This animated film of metamorphosing images features and pays tribute to the music of Charlie Parker. 3) Daybreak express (1953, color, 6 min.): Scenes on and around the elevated subways of New York City appear in rapid succession to the jaunty beat of Duke Ellington's recording of his own composition, Daybreak express. 4) Is that jazz? (1982, color, 9 min.): A jazz/song performance by Gil Scott-Heron who also discusses the nature of his work.
