Summary
"Etaoin shrdlu" are the first two rows of letters on a linotype machine keyboard. This film is a tribute to those machines. Documents the changeover at the New York Times from the hot-type linotype process to a cold-type computerized system, and records the final day of hot type at the newspaper. Machine operators discuss their feelings about the replacement of this traditional printing process and training in a new electronic system.
